I love reading and find it so therapeutic and oddly satisfying. The moment you finish that book, slam it closed and move on to the next one is the best feeling!
At the start of the Covid outbreak and as soon as we went into lockdown I was furloughed meaning I had rather a lot of time on my hands. I have always loved reading so I took the opportunity to make sure I read on a regular basis. I ended up reading 8 books last year!
I have listed them below and my ratings next to each one in the hopes they can help you lovely lot find a book that you will love! I have also included some books in this list that I had read prior to last year.
For more books that I will be reading throughout the year please visit my Instagram and take a look at my ”Book Club” stories.
-
The Hound of The Baskerville, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. 9/10 - I loved this book so much and it is an absolute classic. I tried to read it a few years ago and struggled because of the manner in which it is written (very old fashioned, obviously) but now I have read it, it is a must read for sure!
The 55, James Delargy. 6/10 - This book is a good read however, the ending is extremely anticlimactic. I was devastated that I spent a month reading this book and investing in the characters for it to end the way it did.
Dead in The Water, Penny Farmer. 9/10 - A true crime book written by Penny Farmer, the sister of Chris Farmer who this book is about. Chris Farmer and his girlfriend suffered at the hands of a monster but Penny writes this book so well that for any fan of true crime I would recommend.
The Princess Diarist, Carrie Fisher. 8/10 - The autobiography of a true princess. Carrie Fisher’s, “Sort of memoir” is an extremely honest reveal about her life at the time of filming the Star Wars franchise including information on “that relationship”. For any Star Wars fan, go grab this book now!
That Flat Share, Beth O’Leary. 10/10 - This debut novel by Beth O’Leary is fantastic. A real book of romance. I hate to give too much away but the strap line for this book makes you want to read it before reading the summary, “Tiffy & Leon share a bed, Tiffy & Leon have never met” A wonderfully written love story that kept me up until 3am just so I could read to the end as I just couldn’t put it down.
Virals Series, Kathy Reichs. 8/10 - The Virals franchise consists of: Virals, Seizure, Code, Exposure and Terminal all written by the queen of crime writing herself, Kathy Reichs. These books are great for any teenage audience who like crime dramas. They are a great introduction to the crime genre. I read the first 2 books a few years back and managed to finish the series during lockdown. At 25 I still found them really interesting and really good reads so I wouldn’t limit them solely to teenage readers. Included in this series is a book called Trace Evidence, a book of short stories from the Virals world, giving an insight into their life after the final book Terminal.
Along with the above books I read in 2020, I have also read these books. I mean, I have read others but these are the noteworthy mentions.
-
Size Doesn’t Matter, Neil Back. - International England Rugby Player’s Autobiography.
Victoria Victorious, Jean Plaidy. - Thanks to this book my obsession with Queen Victoria began.
The Spiderwick ChronIcles Series, DiTerlizzi & Black. - A great series for the younger readers comprising of 5 books, 1 of which I managed to read in a day!
A Series of Unfortunate Events, Lemony Snicket. - If you haven’t read these or haven’t heard of these where have you been? I really loved this series. There are 13 books (for obvious reasons) that get thicker the deeper into he plot you get however, the only slight frustration which, if you think about it is one of the main points of the book is that each ending... I won’t say, I don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t read them yet! You will just have to let me know if you figure it out after book number 13.
The Harry Potter Series, J.K.Rowling. - I honestly don’t think I need say more, just make sure you buy these books for your kids or you and you will be sure to have a magical read!
Well, you wonderful lot, happy reading and like I said, check out my instagram for more books in the book club stories.
Love L .X
